About Our Fund
As an offensive lineman in the National Football
League (NFL), Tutan Reyes’ primary responsibility
has been to remove any obstacles that stand in the
way of the quarterback’s ability to perform and
achieve. But Reyes is no stranger to eliminating
obstacles.
For
the NFL veteran, a full athletic scholarship was the
gateway to a college education that once seemed
otherwise unobtainable. Without it, he doesn’t know
how he would have overcome the tremendous hurdle of
paying for college.
For all the personal success that football has
brought him, Reyes understands that playing in the
NFL is a rare opportunity for a very fortunate few.
An athletic scholarship should not be the only way
for hardworking high school students to receive a
higher education, and all the lifelong privileges
and benefits that accompany it.
In 2007, Tutan founded Beyond the Boroughs, a
scholarship program that rewards college-minded
students from low-income families. For Reyes, who
hopes to remove the obstacle of unmet financial need
for these deserving students, this is familiar
terrain.
